Message from the Observer

My name is Silje Nikolaisen, a Norwegian student majoring in political science, though a multi-disciplinary degree focusing on both Norwegian and international politics, at the University of Oslo. Prior to my current studies, I received a bachelor in Japanese language and culture, which included six months at an international university in Japan. My academic background, together with an interest in international politics and culture lead me to apply for my current internship at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo.

Norway belongs to neither G7 nor the EU, but we are very much affected by the international changes, and do our outmost to contribute to international development and the strengthening of international cooperation, the most well-known methods being through mediation and financial assistance. As for the Norwegian structure, our stabile and sustainable welfare system, and high gender equality, are an inspiration for many. These are both important values, rooted deep within the Norwegian culture and politics, but just as with many other countries, international challenges like the demographic shift and migration affect the situation in Norway.

I am looking forward to discussing these matters, and more, with knowledgeable youths from around the world, and I hope to bring a valuable contribution to the agenda through a Norwegian perspective. I am very grateful to be able to participate in the Y7 summit, and am sure this will be a great learning experience.
